Mount Everest – My Pride

Tuesday, May 15, 2007

I have made lots of chat friends through my extensive amount of time being spent in Internet. When the introduction part starts, we go by asl (age, sex, and location). Mine would be 26, Male, and Nepal. They would go like, Okay, but I haven’t heard about Nepal that much though I think I have heard its name.” Then I will say do you know Mount Everest. They would definitely know it and I would say, if you know it you should definitely know about Nepal coz it is situated in Nepal. Sometimes, it so much weird that people would know about Mount Everest and not know about it being in Nepal. Yeah, I know Nepal is one of the poor country but yet it has so many natural resources and monuments that should make it popular around the around. Amongst many, one of them is the Mount Everest, always standing tall and making us proud.

Mount Everest is also called as Sagarmatha. In Tibetan Qomolangma or Chomolungma pronounced as (Jongmalunga). It is the highest mountain on Earth, as measured by the height of its summit above sea level (8,848 meters or 29,028 feet). It is located on the border of Nepal and China. According to English accounts of the mid-19th century, the local name in Darjeeling for Mount Everest was Deodungha, or ‘Holy Mountain.” In the 1960s, the Government of Nepal gave the mountain an official Nepali name: Sagarmatha, meaning "Head of the Sky".

Lots of people tried to climb the summit but the first two who were successful in climbing are New Zealander Edmund Hillary and our own Tenzing Norgay Sherpa. They climbed it on May 29, 1953 at around 11:30 a.m. local time. Lots of attempts are still being made to create one more record. There is a lot of danger in doing such an effort of climbing one of the deadliest mountains ever. Besides that, the Nepalese government also requires a permit from all prospective climbers; this carries a heavy fee, often more than $25,000 per person.

So this is one of the highest mountains ever to stand on the mother Earth, and I am proud to say that it is situated in Nepal and that makes me recognize myself being born in Nepal. My Nepal, My Sagarmatha (Mount Everest), My pride!!!
