2007 Scripps National Spelling Bee

Friday, June 15, 2007

There was a program that I have been watching throughout the week about spelling contest in ESPN. I remember watching it last year with some of my friends, but yesterday it was the final competition. I would have no idea about how to even pronounce those words and those kids would answer it just like that. The power of their brain is so tremendous to memorize all those words and the trick to spell out the words which you have never heard in your life.

It was "The Scripps National Spelling Bee" in that ESPN show that I was watching. The competition was held on Thursday, May 31, 2007 in Washington, DC. There were 286 contestants from different parts of the world and the top spellers were from the United States, Europe, Guam, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands of USA. There were 139 boys and 147 girls between ages of 10 and 15 years.

In two days the numbers of the spellers decreased and at last there were two left. Nate Gartke, age 13, grade 8 from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada who was appearing for the first time and the other one was Evan O’Dorney, age 13, grade 8, from Danville, California, USA appearing third time. So at the final these two went on spelling so many of difficult words. Nate had Vituline, Videlicet, and he missed Coryza with Choryza. Evan had Zoilus, Pappardelle, Yosenabe, and Serrefine. So this year’s Scripps National Spelling Bee winner is Evan O’Dorney from Danville, California. Although Evan was a champion this year he has his interest more in his favorite subjects math and music. He said, “Spelling is just a bunch of memorization.” He said he likes math and music more because it is creative for him, but no matter what he is the champ this year and he was just unbeatable and awesome. I enjoyed every bit of the competition. This competition will surely increase lots of vocabulary of those kids which might help them in future.
