Nepali Women As Bus Conductors

Thursday, August 16, 2007

I just recently read a post in kantipuronline.com. I usually go to this site to see the latest news about Nepal. All the news in the newspaper of Kantipur Newspaper can be found in this site. The post I read today was, "Women bus conducters, a tough new breed." Recently, a lot of women tempo drivers can be seen around the roads of Kathmandu. It is nice to see the women doing the tough job that even men would find hard to do. I don't know if it is only in Nepal or other countries as well that women are really dominated and mostly they are sexually harassed whenever someone gets a chance, either it is in public places or somewhere in the small deserted road. Mostly teenagers and young girls becomes the victim of such act. Like stated in that post, mostly young girls have hard time traveling through a bus. Lots of passengers who have bad intentions and thoughts would just make a move in making a physical contact with the girls.

In such a scene of sexual harassment in general buses in Kathmandu, some girls have tried to create a way of living becoming bus conductors and trying to raise some money out of their jobs. I just wonder how the girls would have survived the harassment in those buses. I know the girls in those jobs must be tough enough to oppose the harassment but yet I think if everyone is aware of such events and try to defend and support the women in our country or any country for that matter, the women would find a relief and may be come up to the level of men and may be by then the equality of men and women would be possible. I really appreciate the guts of those women who are working as bus conductors and hope they will survive and do better with the job they doing. I would also like all the Nepali people to support such brave acts and support not only those girls but any other women or girls who tries to stand up for that they want to do in this world of manhood.
